Valentines Day Cards

Materials: (for all cards)

•Card: Bazzill – French Vanilla, Blackberry
•Paper: Dark blue web paper; Graph paper.
•Embossing powder: Opals Franklin
•Heat tool
•Adhesives: Double sided sticky tape (DSST), Double sided sticky paper (DSSP), Foam mounting tape, Clear sticky dots (Bostik Sticki dots)
•Cutting Tools: Paper trimmer, Craft knife, Friskars ShapeCutter system and shape template HEARTS – 1 #4855
•Embellishments: Wooden craft hearts (4 of 30mm width, 25mm height, and 1 of 40mm width, 34mm height); 26 Gauge purple coloured wire; 32 Gauge silver coloured wire; Assorted beads in clear, blue and purple; 10 small silver eyelets, 3 heart shaped eyelets; Alphabet rub on stickers by Sticker Cafe
•Other Tools: Punch wheel; Card scoring tool; Ruler; Eyelet setting tools; wire pliers and cutter; forceps (to help with the beads); Needle; Metal Ruler, lead pencil.

Make the beaded hearts first

Method:

1.Cover the flattest side of the wooden hearts with DSSP, making sure the DSSP edges are cut flush to the hearts.

2.Make the large heart:

Twist together the ends of a length of each of the purple and silver wires (approx 200mm long).
String beads along the wires, choosing randomly from your bead selection, sometimes threading them over both wires, sometimes over only the purple wire.
When the purple wire only has beads, wind the silver wire around a large needle to create spirals and then rejoin the wires together to continue stringing the beads. (See picture below)
When the beaded wire is long enough, fashion it into a heart shape that fits onto the 40mm heart shape, twist the ends together, trim and wind the ends behind the beads out of sight.
Remove the top piece of backing from the DSSP and arrange the bead heart onto the sticky tile, pushing it down firmly to ensure it adheres tightly to the tile.
Emboss as instructed below.

3.Make the three matching small hearts:

For each heart thread two lengths each of the purple and silver wires (each approx 200mm long) through a large clear bead (ie: 4 pieces of wire in total).
The bead should be approx 20mm from the end of the wire. Wrap the wire around the bead and twist the short ends around the longer. (See picture below). The bead will form the centre of the heart.
Spread the long ends of the wires out, so that one purple and one silver wire goes to each side. Thread beads along the wire, as above, until the beaded wire is long enough to create the heart shape. Twist the two beaded lengths together (forming the base of the heart), trim the ends and hide them behind the wire.
Adhere each wire heart to a wooden heart, (as for the large heart).
Emboss as instructed below.

4. Make the small heart:

Take a length of purple wire approx 100mm long.
Fold it in half, and thread both ends through a purple bead.
Fashion a love heart that will fit onto the small wooden heart, twist the ends together and trim.
Take a piece of silver wire approx 400-500mm long.
Thread approx 15 small beads onto it, twisting the wires together with each bead, so that the beads appear to sprout from the wire. (See picture below)
Wind this around the purple wire heart, allowing the beads to stick out at all angles.
When finished, adhere it to the wooden heart.
Emboss as instructed below.

5.Emboss each heart:

Pour the embossing enamel over the heart. It will stick to the DSST around the wire and beads. Tip off excess enamel and collect for re-use.
Heat the tile with the heat tool, until the embossing enamel melts.
While the tile is still hot and sticky, cover it with more embossing enamel, then tip off the excess.
Repeat the heat, melt, add embossing enamel routine 2-3 more times until you have a thick coating of enamel over the hearts and around the beads, holding them firmly in place. Allow to cool.

5.Trim 10mm of both the length and width of each of the three card squares that were cut from the card. Roll a punch wheel around the edge of each. Use clear sticky dots to adhere a small wooden heart to each square.

Polly Pocket Birthday Cake

Polly Pocket Birthday Cake

This is an easy birthday cake to make - it uses polly pocket accessories to decorate the cake, and you can decorate it so that the children don't need to eat any artificial colours in the icing!!

Step 1

The first step is to bake a large cake - big enough to fit your chosen polly pockets on top of. I used a lamington cake tin - and a lamington cake recipe. The recipe I used is found in "The Golden Wattle Cookery Book" . Best made a day or two being used - which is perfect for party planning!

Step 2

Now you need to ice the cake.
I made a large silver board for the cake to sit on by covering a rectangle of thick cardboard with aluminium foil, and then covering that over with clear contact (the contact stops the Aluminium foil from tearing and allows you to wipe and clean the board).
I iced the entire cake with light brown icing (using cocoa to colour the icing).

First Layer of Icing

The icing can be made by melting a dessert spoon of butter in a small saucepan, then take off the heat. Add icing and some cocoa, and mix adding small amounts of water until at the desired consistency. You can smooth out the icing by dipping a knife into a cup of hot water, and applying this straight to the icing.

After I had finished icing the cake, I sprinkled over it lightly with drinking chocolate to create a sandy appearance to the icing.

Step 3

Now I made some blue icing, the same way as I made the above icing but substituting the cocoa with blue food colouring. I used this to make the "water" on the board, surrounding the "island". I did it this way so that the kids would not have to eat the blue food colouring in the blue icing with the cake, but could still enjoy the great colours that the artificial colours provide.

Then I arranged my daughters chosen (and carefully cleaned) polly pocket toys on the cake, along with some ceramic flower decorations and a happy birthday sign. I filled the swimming pool with blue icing too.

Step 4

Next I made some butter icing - place 2 dessert spoons of softened butter in a bowl, Add icing sugar, colouring and small amounts of milk while mixing with a wooden spoon. I made pink icing - you can use cochineal or small amounts of red to colour the icing,
I piped the icing using a rosette nozzle around the base of the cake (where it would be easily removed when cutting the cake so the kids didn't eat any artificial food colouring), and in the places I had chosen to place candles.

Step 5

Finally, just before presenting the cake to the girls at the party, I pushed the candles into the pre-prepared rosettes.
