Craft - Recycled T-shirt Card

March 4th 2010 13:00
: Recycled T-shirt Card
When my favourite t-shirt got a hole in it, instead of just throwing away, I decided to use the material to make some cards - the beautiful design on the shirt was too good to waste!

Materials Required:

1. A piece of white A4 card
2. Double-sided sticky tape (DSST) - thin is best
3. T-shirt (or any other material) with designs on it that you like.
4. Sticker Maker - I used a xyron 2 1/2" sticker maker. If you don't have a sticker maker, you can use either DSST or Double-sided sticky paper (such as jac paper) instead.
5.Craft knife
6. A sheet of graph paper
7. Ruler
8. Hole piercer (such as a needle, pin or drawing pin)
9. Paper scorer

Instructions

1. Cut your piece of A4 paper so that it measures 15cm x 29.5 cm, to make your base card.
2. Score the base card at 10.5cm amd 21cm, measuring from the short edge, fold. (see image below)

3. Create a template using graph paper, like the one pictured below.
Cut out a rectangle of graph paper measuring 15.0cm x 10.5 cm.
Using your pencil and ruler, along the short edge mark at 2.5cm and 8.0 cm along the edge.
Along the long edge mark at 1.5cm, 7.0cm, 8.0cm and 13.5cm.
Draw in the two squares created by the intersections of these measurements (see photo )

4. Place the graph paper exactly over the middle section ot your base card, and using the hole piercer, place holes at the four corners of each square, piercing through to your base card.

5. Use the pierced holes as a guide as to where to cut our your two squares. Use a craft knife and ruler to cut out the two squares.

6. Cut out a piece of material that is approximately 6.5cm x 30.0 cm.
NB: The piece must be large enough to cover both of the holes cut in the card base, yet not so large that it will protrude from behind the concealing (8.5cm wide) flap when the card is folded.

7. Run the piece of material through the xyron sticker maker.
NB: If you don't have a sticker maker you can use DSST or Double sided sticky paper to add stick to the back.

8. Fold the concealing (8.5cm) flap behind the card front, and using a lead pencil mark with dots the corners of the squares onto the flap.
These dots are to help you place the material sticker onto the flap in the correct position so that it will be sitting directly behind the two square windows.

NB: The shirt sticker should be larger than the area indicated by the dots, but not protrude out from behind the concealing flap.

9. Adhere your material sticker to the concealing flap, using the marked dots as a guide.

10. Place DSST as shown, making sure that it DOES NOT SHOW WHEN THE FLAP IS CLOSED - either through the windows, or out behind the concealing flap.

11. Close the flap

NB: To make the card with one rectangular window, use the same template as above, but when cutting with the craft knife, remove the bar between the two windows, creating a rectangle.
